Line Dancing Class Participants to Perform with Flo Rida

On July 16, 2017, thirteen dancers enrolled in Roanoke Parks and Recreation’s weekly line dancing fitness class will be performing alongside Flo Rida at his concert in Elmwood Park. The dance, choreographed by line dancing instructor, Cheryl Evans, is set to Flo Rida’s hit song, My House.

The line dancing class has been meeting weekly at Mountain View Recreation Center, also known as the historic Fishburn Mansion, for years. Many participants are new to dance when they start the class but are looking for a new, fun way to get active. The beginner-friendly class offers a welcoming environment for women and men of all ages. In fact, the oldest participant in the class, Lorena Terry, just celebrated her 82nd birthday.

“There are a lot of things that I like about the class. We have good fellowship and it’s a lot of fun, plus it’s good exercise. It keeps you active, and it’s also mentally good for you because you have to remember what your steps are and what you’re supposed to do,” said Terry. Before line dancing, Terry was a fan of the jitterbug and square dancing. She has also been enrolled in Roanoke Parks and Recreation’s H2Fit aquatic fitness classes since it was offered 27 years ago.

“Some people say that they’re too old to do something, but you’re never too old to do something that you want to,” Terry commented. Her message to people who are new to line dancing? “I would say don’t give up, because it’s a lot of fun, plus it’s good for you and helps keep you active.”

Watch the class perform live at Flo Rida’s upcoming concert in Elmwood Park on Sunday, July 16. For more information about the Budweiser Summer Concert Series, visit Downtown Roanoke Inc.
