VDSS Celebrates National Adoption Month
Every November, the Virginia Department of Social Services recognizes National Adoption Month to raise awareness regarding an estimated 900 children in Virginia's foster care system who are available for adoption and await loving families. This month brings particular attention to the work we do every day to provide education, support and resources to waiting youth as well as current and prospective adoptive families.
Our collaborative work helps to bring love, support, permanency and better outcomes for every child in foster care. Our statewide adoption conference underscores the important role adoptive families play, and provides an opportunity to highlight the support available to current and prospective adoptive families beyond adoption. As Governor McAuliffe outlines in his Adoption Month Proclamation, it is critical that every child who cannot be raised by a birth parent find a permanent home because children have better outcomes when they are raised in a family environment.
